EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team wrapped up a sweep of their six-match home stand after defeating Chicago State University 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-18) on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Bojana Mitrovic led UTRGV (9-7, 3-0 WAC) with 10 kilss and also added six digs and two blocks. Junior
Dubravak Vukoja paced the offense with 33 assists while also adding seven digs and two blocks while junior
Gysell Zayas paced the defense 19 digs.
Summer Farris led the way for Chicago State (10-10, 1-3 WAC) while Megan Klavitter posted 12 digs and four assists.
UTRGV jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set after a kill from Mitrovic that forced Chicago State to call a timeout. UTRGV answered with five straight points to grab the 11-1 lead after a Chicago State error. Later in the set, a kill by freshman
Veronika Jandova made it 17-3 before UTRGV closed out the set with an 8-5 run.
Chicago State got out to the 3-1 lead in the second set before UTRGV answered back with four straight points to take the 5-4 lead. It was a lead that they wouldn't give up as they went on a 10-4 run that was capped by a kill by
Ragni Steen Knudsen making it 15-8. A kill by Jandova pushed the lead to 23-16 but Chicago State rallied to get it within three but it wasn't enough as UTRGV took the second set.
The third set went back and forth early on as the set was tied at four after a UTRGV service error. UTRGV rallied with an 11-4 run to push their lead to 15-8 at the media timeout. Later in the set, a kill by Mitrovic made it 20-12 before a kill by Knudsen closed out the match.
UTRGV will look to remain perfect in WAC play as they hit the road to face Utah Valley on October 5 and Seattle U on October 7.
