Volleyball Drops Tournament Opener to UC Riverside

LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team opened the Red Raider Classic with a 1-3 (27-25, 13-25, 18-25, 21-25) loss to UC Riverside (UCR) on Friday at United Supermarkets Arena.

Junior Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (2-6) with 15 kills and 10 digs, marking her first double-double of the year and the 17th of her career. Junior Alexandra Ecker finished with a career-high tying 11 kills on .333 hitting with five digs. Senior Bojana Mitrovic finished with nine kills and 10 digs. Junior Dubravka Vukoja dished out 41 assists with seven digs.

Kaiulani Ahuna led UCR (6-1) with 12 kills and 11 digs. Yuliya Ushakova recorded 11 kills on .292 hitting.

UCR jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 6-4 in the first set. A pair of Ecker kills allowed UTRGV to score three-straight points to take a 7-6 lead, but UCR scored four-straight points and six out of seven to go up 12-8. UCR pushed its lead to 19-14 on an Ahuna kill and still led by five at 23-18 on a Ushakova kill. Knudsen answered with a kill to spark a 5-0 run as UTRGV pulled even. UTRGV successfully defend on set point twice and then Mitrovic, sophomore Barbara Silva and Vukoja all recorded kills to end the set.

UCR took an early lead in the second set as well, going up 5-1. UCR pushed its lead to 11-5 on an attack error, and then after a Vukoja kill, UCR won six-straight serves to push the set out of reach.

Knudsen came up with a pair of kills to help UTRGV go up 3-0 in the third set. UCR won six of the next seven serves to take the lead. UTRGV was within one at 6-7 on a Knudsen kill, but UCR scored the next four points as part of an 8-2 run to pull away for a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was tight early, with UTRGV going up 6-5 on an error and pulling within 12-14 on a Knudsen kill. UCR won the next four serves to go up 18-12, but a pair of kills by freshman Los Fresnos alum Jackie Kingsbury and a pair of kills by Knudsen allowed UTRGV to go on an 8-2 run, tying the set at 20. UCR responded by winning the next three serves and five of the final six to end the match.

UTRGV is back in action at 4 p.m. against Lamar.
