EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team dropped their third straight Western Athletic Conference game after falling 65-59 to Grand Canyon University on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Junior Quynne Huggins led UTRGV (10-8, 0-3 WAC) with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Redshirt freshman Amara Graham chipped in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Grand Canyon (8-9, 2-1 WAC) had four players in double-figures as Brie Mobley led all scorers with 18 points while dishing out a game-high six assists. August Touchard added 17 points while playing all 40 minutes. Vanessa Murphy chipped in 13 points and Jessica Gajewski added 10 points.

Graduate student Alicia McCray got the scoring started in the first quarter with a three-pointer but Grand Canyon answered with a three-pointer from Murphy. Later in the quarter, Huggins knocked down a three-pointer that made it 8-7 UTRGV and then after a three-pointer by junior Megan Johnson Grand Canyon closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run to make it 15-11.

Johnson started the second quarter with a three-pointer that got UTRGV within one and then a pair of free throws from Huggins gave them the 16-15 lead. Grand Canyon answered with a 7-0 run before UTRGV closed out the half with jumpers from junior Nichele Hyman and graduate student Laura Van Tilburg as Grand Canyon took the 22-20 lead into the locker room.

Grand Canyon opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run to extend their lead to 35-24 before Huggins put in a layup with 4:16 left in the quarter. Graham got her first bucket of the game at the end of the third that got UTRGV with seven at 39-32.

Graham turned in on in the fourth quarter, where she scored nine of her 11 points, with a three-pointer and then later knocked down a couple of free throws to keep Grand Canyon's lead at 46-39. UTRGV kept it close in the fourth as junior Daniella Azubell hit a three to make it 56-50 but Grand Canyon took advantage of the free throw line going 14-of-16 in the fourth quarter to keep the game out of reach.

UTRGV will hit the road for their first conference road game of the season as they travel to Orem, Utah to face Utah Valley University on January 18.
