EDINBURG – A season-high seven players reached double-figures in scoring to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team past Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) 96-75 on Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
UTRGV (8-8) is the only team in the NCAA to have seven players reach double-figures in scoring this season. This is the first time UTRGV has accomplished the feat since Dec. 4, 1993 against Concordia.
Sophomore
Xavier McDaniel Jr. led UTRGV with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Senior
Nick Dixon scored 14 points with a season-high seven assists. Junior
Terry Winn posted his fifth-career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Lesley Varner Jr. scored a season-high tying 14 points with two steals. Senior McAllen-native
Moe McDonald scored 12 points with four rebounds and three assists. Senior
Dan Kimasa scored 10 points with a season-high tying eight rebounds. Senior
Mike Hoffman scored 10 points with four rebounds. Junior
Lew Stallworth dished out a career-high tying 10 assists with a career-high tying seven rebounds.
UTRGV dished out a season-high 26 assists, the team's highest total since Dec. 29, 2016 against Our Lady of the Lake (28).
Courtney Julien led OLLU (9-5) with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Simon Shafack Jr. scored 11 points with eight rebounds and three assists.
Yephnick Adelphonse scored 10 points with three steals.
UTRGV hit 13 of its first 18 shots, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc to jump out to a 33-11 lead over the first 7:37. UTRGV scored the first eight points of the game, and then, with the lead cut to 11-7, UTRGV hit 8-of-10 shots, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, to fuel a 22-4 run.
UTRGV took its largest lead of the half with 9:18 remaining when a pair of Winn free throws made the score 38-14.
OLLU followed with a 24-13 run to pull within 51-38 early in the second half, but UTRGV responded with a 19-6 run, capped by a Hoffman layup, to go up 70-44 and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV opens Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday at 7 p.m. at UMKC in a rematch of the 2017 WAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
