Women's Basketball Falls at Seattle U

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to Seattle U 64-56 on Saturday at the Connolly Complex.
 
Sophomore Megan Johnson led UTRGV (10-10, 0-5 WAC) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Graduate student Alicia McCray scored a season-high 14 points with a season-high nine rebounds.
 
Alexis Montgomery led Seattle U (10-10, 4-1 WAC) with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Jacinta Beckley finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Kallin Spiller scored 10 points with four rebounds.
 
UTRGV kept Seattle U off the board for the first five minutes of the game, and the game was tied at 4 with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter after a jumper by junior Quynne Huggins. Montgomery responded with a three to spark a 9-0 that put Seattle U up 13-4.
 
Seattle U went up 18-8 early in the second quarter before Johnson made a layup and McCray hit a jumper to start a 9-2 run that saw UTRGV climb within 20-17.
 
UTRGV was still within three at 23-20 on a three by junior Idil Türk, but Montgomery made a pair of baskets and a free throw to power an 8-0 run that allowed Seattle U to push its lead to 31-20.
 
Seattle U led by as many as 16, going up 50-34 on a Spiller three-pointer at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter.
 
UTRGV got as close as six when a pair of Johnson free throws made the score 62-56 with 1:09 remaining in the fourth.
 
UTRGV returns home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Chicago State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
