CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team shot .508 (31-for-61) from the field to beat Chicago State University (CSU) 87-81 on Saturday at Jones Convocation Center.
This is the second time UTRGV (11-11, 3-3 WAC) has hit more than half of its shots after shooting a season-high .528 (28-for-53) at CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 11.
UTRGV is now in the midst of its winningest season since 2012-13 (16-16).
Senior Nick Dixon led UTRGV with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc, plus 8-of-12 from the line, with eight rebounds and two assists. Junior Terry Winn posted his second double-double with a season-high tying 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. a season-high tying 10 rebounds, a career-high four assists, and two steals. Sophomore Xavier McDaniel Jr. finished with 13 points.
Glen Burns led CSU (2-21, 0-6 WAC) with 21 points and three steals. Fred Sims Jr. scored 20 points. Delonte Simmons scored 14 points with eight rebounds.
CSU hit eight of its first 13 shots to jump out to an 18-8 lead.
UTRGV responded by hitting its next four shots, including two by Dixon, to go on a 10-2 run and pull within 20-18.
CSU pushed its lead back to 28-23 before a McDaniel jumper sparked a 14-4 run to end the half with UTRGV up 37-32.
Dixon hit three free throws at the start of the second half to push UTRGV's lead to eight. UTRGV went up by as much as 10 midway through the half when a three by freshman Greg Bowie made the score 66-56.
CSU followed with an 12-3 run to pull within 69-68, but Dixon converted two three-point plays to power an 8-2 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on $2 Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Wayland Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. General admission tickets and most concession items will cost $2 or less. Doors open at 6.
