EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team picked up its first home win of the season by defeating Prairie View A&M University 5-1 on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
"We needed to come out and go to work," UTRGV head coach Dann Nelson said. "I kind of challenged the team that I wanted to see first sets quickly. For the most part we did that and then we were able to close them out. We started fast and we were able to finish on five of those six courts. I am pretty happy with that."
 
Following the morning delay, the match started with singles play. Sophomore Dennis Boisseau got things rolling for UTRGV (2-2) with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court two over Anirudh Yadav. Freshman Zane Kohrs quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Zachary Suico on court four that made it 2-0.
 
Senior Elliot Johnstone extended UTRGV's lead with a straight set 6-1, 6-3 win over Taqel Lewis on court three and then moments later sophomore Clément Sarradin clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cesar Reyna on court six.
 
Senior Koby Jansen made it 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ulrick Boyogueno on court one before Prairie View A&M (0-1) picked up their lone point on court five to close it out.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on February 4 when they host UTSA at 11 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Gates open at 10 a.m.
