EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team opened up Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 54-52 loss to UMKC on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Laura Van Tilburg led UTRGV (10-6, 0-1 WAC) with 11 points and four rebounds. Junior
Krisynthia Sampson scored 10 points with nine rebounds.
Aries Washington led UMKC (5-11, 1-0 WAC) with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Samantha Waldron scored 17 points with six rebounds and three assists.
India Johnson scored 13 points.
UTRGV and UMKC traded baskets over the first four minutes before a Van Tilburg jumper sparked a 9-3 run to put UTRGV up 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.
UMKC came back to take a 20-18 lead on a Washington jumper midway through the second quarter, but UTRGV responded with an 8-0 run to go up 26-20 on a layup by graduate student
Alicia McCray.
UTRGV led by as much as seven, including 46-39 on a McCray layup early in the fourth, but UMKC closed the game on a 15-6 run, including a pair of Washington free throws to take the lead with eight seconds remaining.
UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. against CSU Bakersfield. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive WAC rally towels. Doors open at 6.
