PHOENIX, Ariz. – Junior
Kyle Edwards scored the game-winner in overtime to give The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Grand Canyon University (GCU) on Saturday at GCU Stadium for its third straight victory.
UTRGV (9-4, 4-2 WAC) and GCU (6-7, 3-3 WAC) were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation before Edwards knocked in his seventh goal of the season just 2:58 into overtime. It was Edwards' first game-winner this season.
Junior
Andy Rios (6-3) made a career-high seven saves with five of his saves coming in the first half helping to keep the match scoreless.
Senior
Jaakko Hietikko got UTRGV on the board in the second half as he scored his third goal of the season. Hietikko took the pass from junior
William Akio at 47:33 giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead. The assist for Akio is his eighth of the season, which is the second most assists in a single season in Division I program history.
Justin Rasmussen tied things at one with a goal for GCU at 53:07 in the second half as he was assisted by Marlon Atondo.
GCU outshot UTRGV 11 to 9 and 8 to 5 on goal.
UTRGV will be back in action on Friday, October 19, when it hosts CSU Bakersfield at 5 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
