Volleyball Falls to New Mexico State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to New Mexico State 2-3 (26-28, 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 7-15) on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Senior Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (14-8, 5-3 WAC) with 22 kills on .327 hitting and 13 digs for her 10thdouble-double. Freshman Pamela Moreira recorded 15 kills on .323 hitting and 11 digs for her second double-double. Senior Antonela Jularic posted 12 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double. Senior Dubravka Vukoja dished out 43 assists with 13 digs for her fourth double-double. Senior Gysell Zayas recorded a match-high 27 digs.
 
Cat Kelly led NM State (15-5, 5-2 WAC) with 14 kills on .400 hitting. Savannah Davison recorded 13 kills and 14 digs. Tatyana Battle finished with 12 kills and 16 digs. Briana Ainsworth posted a double-double with 25 assists and 14 digs. Natalie Mikels added a double-double with 22 assists and 15 digs. Megan Hart finished with 10 kills on .450 hitting and four blocks.
 
After UTRGV dropped the first set, Moreira, senior Alexandra Ecker and Jularic all came up with kills to help UTRGV jump out to a 5-0 lead in set two. UTRGV pushed its lead to eight on a Knudsen kill that made the score 15-7. UTRGV extended its lead to nine at 22-13 on an error and 10 at 23-13 on another error. UTRGV ended the set with a block by Ecker and Vukoja.
 
After dropping the third set, UTRGV broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth set with kills by Moreira, Jularic and Knudsen. UTRGV extended its lead to 17-11 on an Ecker kill. NM State got as close as 20-21, but a pair of Knudsen kills helped UTRGV score four of the final five points to end the set.
 
NM State responded by jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the fifth set and never looked back. 
 
UTRGV hosts CSU Bakersfield for a rematch of last year's WAC Tournament Championship Match on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive BelieVe in a Cure rally towels. Doors open at 6.
 
There will be a watch party at Adolios in Brownsville. Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to get UTRGV swag and participate in raffles.
