BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball snapped its two-game losing streak with a 57-53 victory over Canisius College on Saturday at Koessler Athletic Center.
Senior
Idil Türk led UTRGV (2-2) with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-13 shooting, which includes going 4-of-8 beyond the arc. Senior
Quynne Huggins added in 10 points with four rebounds.
As a team, UTRGV shot 8-of-19 from beyond the arc and dished out 12 assists compared to just a season-low nine turnovers.
Canisius (0-3) was led by
Shannon Conley who scored 14 points while grabbing seven rebounds.
Sara Hinriksdottir finished with a double-double after scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
Canisius grabbed the early lead as a three-pointer from Conley gave them the 14-2 lead at the 4:38 mark in the first quarter. UTRGV got within 14-10 after a three-pointer from Türk with 2:10 left in the quarter but it was Canisius who took the 19-13 lead into the second quarter.
A layup by Canisius'
Amanda Schiefen and a free throw by Hinriksdottir pushed their lead to 22-16 before Türk knocked down a three-pointer and then converted a pair of free throws to get UTRGV within one at 22-21 with 6:07 left in the half.
UTRGV took its first lead of the game after a layup by Huggins and then after exchanging baskets a three-pointer by senior
Krisynthia Sampson tied it at 26-26. Sampson later knocked down another three-pointer to give UTRGV the 34-31 lead but Canisius scored the final three points of the half to go into the locker room tied at 34-34.
The third quarter went back and forth as there were four lead changes and two ties. Junior
Megan Johnson knocked down a jumper with 6:08 left in the quarter to give UTRGV its biggest lead of the third at 41-37. Hinriksdottir then made a layup and Conley made a free throw to give them the 42-41 lead but a jumper by Türk at the end of the quarter gave UTRGV the 43-42 lead.
UTRGV opened the scoring in the fourth with a layup by Sampson but a three-pointer by
Anndea Zeigler tied the game at 45-45. Türk followed with her final three-pointer of the game giving UTRGV the 48-45 lead for the last time.
Junior
Makaela Mosley made a layup at the 6:25 mark gave UTRGV its biggest lead of the game at 52-45. Canisius got within 52-50 after a
Maria Welch three-pointer but UTRGV held on for its second victory of the season.
UTRGV will be back in action on Tuesday, November 20, when it travels to Amherst, Massachusetts to face UMass at 6 p.m. at the William D. Mullins Center.
