MHERST, Mass. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball had four players in double-figures as it fell to the University of Massachusetts 74-70 on Tuesday at William D. Mullins Center.
UTRGV (2-3) made a season-high 10 three-pointers as senior
Idil Türk led the way with 16 points on a career-high five three-pointers. Junior
Megan Johnson added 14 points with a career-high seven assists. Redshirt sophomore
Amara Graham chipped in 12 points and senior
Quynne Huggins scored 10 points.
UMass' (3-1)
Hailey Leidel led all scorers with 28 points and recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Bre Hampton-Bey scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists and
Anil Soysal added 12 points.
UTRGV came out of the gates on fire from beyond the arc as it made 5-of-8 from three. Türk was a perfect 3-for-3 from three in the first quarter as she got the first six points of the game for UTRGV. Türk added her third three-pointer and Huggins followed with a three of her own to give UTRGV the 17-13 lead.
Johnson and Graham opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and a layup to extend UTRGV's lead to 25-19. UMass then went on a 6-2 run to get within 28-25 after a Hampton-Bey layup but a couple of junior
Makaela Mosley free throws and another three from Huggins gave UTRGV its biggest lead of the half at 40-32 heading into halftime.
UTRGV went 9-for-13 from beyond the arc in the first half and shot 69 percent from the floor.
In the second half, UTRGV went quiet from beyond the arc as it made just one three-pointer. UTRGV grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 44-34 after a layup by Johnson but UMass answered once again with an 8-0 run to get within 44-42.
UTRGV got back-to-back buckets from Johnson and Huggins that made it 48-42 as UMass rallied to tie it at 53-53 at the end of the third.
UMass took the lead for the first time since the second quarter at 57-56 after a layup by
Destiney Philoxy. Huggins gave UTRGV for the last time after a jumper at the 7:08 mark in the fourth as UMass pushed their lead to 72-63 after a pair of free throws by Hampton-Bey.
UTRGV got within three at 72-69 with a 6-0 run but Leidel made a couple of free throws to put the game away.
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday, November 25 when it hosts St. Thomas University at the UTRGV Fieldhouse at 2 p.m. Doors open at 1.
