EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team completed the season sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, by winning 68-59 on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
UTRGV (5-3) earns three points for the win while Corpus Christi (4-3) earns one point for winning the attendance challenge 1,160-to-695 UTRGV now leads the showdown standings 20.5-to-5.5.
Graduate student
Solomon Hainna led UTRGV with a career-high 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and one block. Sophomore
Greg Bowie scored 10 points. Graduate student
Tyson Smith finished with nine points and a career-high tying two blocks. Senior
Terry Winn III scored eight points with seven rebounds and four assists. Junior
Jordan Jackson also scored eight points. Sophomore
Javon Levi scored seven points with six assists, one block and two steals.
Myles Smith led Corpus Christi with 20 points.
Corpus Christi led 8-7 after five minutes. That's when UTRGV hit three-straight three-pointers, including one by Jackson and two by Bowie, to power an 11-0 run to take an 18-8 lead.
Corpus Christi responded with a 12-2 run to tie the game at 20 before another Jackson three sparked an 11-4 run to put UTRGV up 31-24.
UTRGV maintained a small lead until the midway point of the second half, when a three and a layup by
Jake Babic tied the game at 48.
Then, with the score tied at 50, Hainna and Winnmade layups, Winn sunk a pair of free throws, and junior
Lesley Varner II turned a steal into a layup to restore UTRGV's lead for good.
UTRGV is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Houston.
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Dec. 4 when women's basketball visits Corpus Christi.
