EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament with a 3-0 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (13-5-0, 8-3-0) will face seventh-seeded UNLV in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Seattle U's Championship Field. UTRGV beat UNLV 2-0 at home on Sept. 22. The winner will face either third-seeded Seattle U or sixth-seeded San José State in the semifinals on Friday at 9 p.m.
UTRGV enters the tournament having won seven of its last eight matches.
Junior
Kyle Edwards recorded his third multi-goal match, scoring UTRGV's first two goals, including his third game-winner.
The first goal came in the 21
stminute off of passes from junior
William Akio and graduate student
Matt Beaulaurier.
The second goal came off a feed by senior
Rooby Dalusma in the 34
rdminute.
Edwards now had 13 goals and 30 points this season, the second-highest single-season totals in NCAA Division I program history.
Akio has 10 assists, tied for NCAA DI program record. Dalusma has four assists while Beaulaurier has three.
Dalusma added his second goal of the season off a pass from senior
Isaiah Hinds in the 60
thminute for a season-high three points. It was Hinds' third assist.
Junior
Andy Rios (10-4-0) made three saves for his second shutout of the season.
Carlos Mercado (1-11-1) finished with six saves for UIW (2-14-1, 2-9-0).
UTRGV outshot UIW 14-4 overall and 9-3 on goal.
