EDINBURG –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team won the UTRGV Fall Classic Championship by beating Louisiana 75-60 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse to finish the tournament 2-0.

Senior Krisynthia Sampson led five UTRGV players in double-figures scoring with a season-high 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Amara Graham scored 13 points with a career-high tying seven assists. Türk scored 13 points with three assists. Senior Quynne Huggins scored a season-high 12 points with a season-high eight rebounds. Northcutt scored 10 points with 13 rebounds (six offensive) and two blocks for her third double-double.

Ty'Reona Doucet led Louisiana (2-5) with 16 points. Diamond Morrison scored 13 points with six assists. Brandi Williams scored 13 points with five rebounds.

UTRGV outrebounded Louisiana 49-27. The plus 22 rebounding differential is UTRGV's largest since Feb. 8, when UTRGV outrebounded Grand Canyon 40-18 on the road.

Louisiana hit its first seven shots, including three from downtown, to take a 19-8 lead in the opening six minutes of the game.

Louisiana still led by 10 at 23-13 when a jumper by junior Makaela Mosley sparked an 8-0 run to bring UTRGV within two.

Then, with Louisiana up 31-28 late in the second quarter, Huggins converted a three-point play and senior Jameka Dowell drained a three to give UTRGV a 34-31 lead.

The game stayed tight over the next eight minutes, but late in the third, with UTRGV down two, Graham hit two layups and Huggins added a three and a free throw to help UTRGV score 12-straight points as part of a 15-2 run that saw UTRGV go up 57-46.

Louisiana scored seven of the next 10 points to climb to within six before a Huggins three put UTRGV up 60-51 and pushed the game out of reach.

UTRGV visits Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
