EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Rice 75-67 on Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Terry Winn IIIled UTRGV (7-6) with 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Graduate student
Tyson Smith scored 11 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore
Javon Levi scored 10 points with four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior
Jordan Jackson scored 10 points with three rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Junior
Lesley Varner II grabbed a team-high nine rebounds with nine points, four assists and two steals.
Chris Mullins led Rice (5-7) with 22 points and four assists.
Trey Murphy III scored 13 points.
Quentin Millora-Brown scored 12 points with 10 rebounds.
Drew Peterson scored 12 points with eight rebounds.
The first half was tight throughout. UTRGV led by as much as three at 11-8 on a Levi layup, but neither team led by more than a single possession until a Mullins three put Rice up 27-23 with 1:56 left in the half. That was part of a 12-4 run by Rice to close the half up 31-25.
Rice then opened up the second half on an 14-4 run to take a 45-29 lead.
Sophomore
Greg Bowie II, senior
Johnny Crnogorac and Smith snapped the run by making three-pointers to spark a 13-3 run and bring UTRGV within 50-42.
UTRGV got as close as six at 56-50 on a Varner jumper and 59-53 on a Levi three with 5:38 remaining. Rice, however, responded with a 9-3 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against McNeese State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive tacky holiday t-shirts. Doors open at 6.
