WACO – In its final game of 2018, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell 98-37 to No. 6 Baylor University on Monday at Ferrell Center.
Senior
Quynne Huggins led the way for UTRGV (6-7) with a team-high 15 points while making a game-high four three-pointers. Senior
Idil Türk chipped in nine points while senior
Jameka Dowell added six points.
Baylor (9-2) had seven players in double-figures scoring led by
Lauren Cox who scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Queen Egbo recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points with 10 rebounds.
Baylor opened the game by making the first three baskets before Huggins knocked down a three-pointer to get UTRGV on the board. Baylor answered with a 25-3 run to close out the quarter to grab the 31-6 lead.
Baylor got the first eight points of the second quarter with Egbo scoring five of those points to extend their lead to 38-6. UTRGV answered with a 13-7 run with the help of four three-pointers with a pair coming from Huggins, one from Türk, and the final from sophomore
Valeria Tapia to get to 45-19.
Baylor closed out the half and opened the third quarter with an 18-0 run to make the score 63-19 to put the game out of reach.
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday, January 5, when it opens Western Athletic Conference play against California Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
It will be Friends and Family Night and Rally Towel Giveaway where fans can enjoy four tickets, four hotdogs, and four drinks for $25. Additionally, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive rally towels. Doors open at 6.
