EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 69-55 loss to Texas Southern University (TSU) on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Graduate student Madison Northcutt led UTRGV (6-4) by posting her fourth double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She went 11-for-16 from the line, tying for the ninth-highest single-game total of free throws made in program history. Senior Jameka Dowell scored a season-high 12 points.
 
As a team, UTRGV went 27-for-33 from the line, the fourth-highest single-game total of free throws made in program history.
 
Marquia Turner led TSU (3-5) 26 points while going 5-for-7 from behind the arc. Brenae Andrews hit two of her three three-point attempts as TSU finished 7-for-12. Andrews finished with 11 points while Niya Mitchell scored 13 points.
 
Turner scored eight points as TSU went 6-for-10 to help TSU build a 14-3 lead over the first six and a half minutes. 
 
Two baskets later, Northcutt hit two free throws and senior Quynne Huggins made a three to bring UTRGV within 16-10.
 
UTRGV trailed 31-22 at halftime when TSU went on an 18-8 run to takes its largest lead of the game at 49-30.
 
UTRGV scored the next eight points as part of a 13-2 run to pull within 51-43, but that was as close as UTRGV got.
 
UTRGV takes some time off for finals before returning to action on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. against No. 12 Texas at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive white t-shirts as part of a white out promotion. Doors open at 6.
 
This is the eighth meeting all-time between UTRGV and Texas, with the last six meetings occurring in Austin since 2003, and the first taking place at a tournament in George West in 1977. This is the second-straight year UTRGV is hosting a Power 5 opponent after hosting USC on Dec. 20, 2017.
