EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team closed out its three-match homestand with a 5-2 win over the University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
"We fought really hard and it worked out for us," UTRGV head coach Dann Nelson said. "We blew up our doubles and started from scratch and it worked today. It was the first doubles point we had all year and we needed it against a good team like Incarnate Word. We got that doubles point and it gave us the momentum in singles. We found a way to pull it out today."

UTRGV (3-3) fell behind in doubles after falling on court two but senior Koby Jansen and junior Yehonatan Kaufman rallied to win 6-3 on court one over Sebastian Mortier and Gabriel Evans. Senior Elliot Johnstone and sophomore Mateo Schmit battled on court three to win 7-6 over Luke Godwin and Caleb Dyer to clinch the point.
 
In singles, UIW (2-4) tied things up after winning on court six but Kaufman quickly answered back with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mortier on court three to regain the 2-1 lead.
 
UIW tied things up at two points apiece after winning on court two but Johnstone rallied after dropping the first set to Joey Vatanadilok on court four. Johnstone picked up the 6-3 win in the second set before closing it out with a 6-2 win in the third giving UTRGV the 3-2 lead.
 
Jansen, who dropped his first set 2-6 to Evans on court one, followed with a 6-3 win in the second set and then clinched the win for UTRGV with a 6-4 win in the third.
 
Freshman Zane Kohrs closed out the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 win over Nedim Ahmic on court five. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Tuesday, February 13, when they travel to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2 p.m.
