SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Seattle U 85-68 on Thursday at the Connolly Complex.
Senior
Nick Dixon led UTRGV (14-13, 5-5 WAC) with 17 points, six rebounds and a career-high six steals. Junior
Terry Winn scored a season-high tying 17 points with six rebounds. Sophomore
Xavier McDaniel Jr. scored 11 points. Freshman
Greg Bowie scored 10 points with two steals.
Morgan Means led Seattle U (18-9, 7-3 WAC) with 19 points.
Matej Kavas scored 18 points with nine rebounds.
Aaron Menzies scored 15 points with 13 rebounds.
Josh Hearlihy scored 13 points with five rebounds and seven assists.
Richaud Gittens scored 11 points and four assists.
UTRGV kept the game close over the first 10 minutes, tying the game at 2 on a Winn jumper and then pulling within one possession three other times, including at 13-10 on a pair of Dixon free throws.
Then, with UTRGV down 17-12 midway through the first half, a Kavas jumper sparked a 7-0 run to put Seattle U up 12.
Jumpers by Bowie and Winn helped UTRGV pull within 25-16 at the 6:29 mark before Seattle U went on an 11-2 run to go up 36-18.
Seattle U pushed its lead to 50-30 early in the second half and maintained that lead for about eight minutes, but with the score 62-44, Winn hit a layup and three free throws to power a 9-3 run that saw UTRGV pull within 65-53. Means responded with back-to-back three-pointers, however, to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV plays its final road game of the regular season on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Utah Valley.
