CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team is set to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (3-3) evened their record with a 5-2 win over the University of the Incarnate Word on February 10.
UTRGV fell behind early in doubles as Incarnate Word won on court two but the team of
Koby Jansen and
Yehonatan Kaufman won on court one to even things up. The duo of
Elliot Johnstone and Mateo Schmit clinched the point with a win on court three.
In singles, Incarnate Word won on court six to tie the match at one but Kaufman regained the lead with a win on court three over Sebastian Mortier.
Incarnate Word answered right back with a win on court two before Johnstone gave UTRGV the lead once again with a win over Joey Vatanadilok. Jansen clinched the win with a victory on court one over Gabriel Evans.
Zane Kohrs closed out the match with a win over Nedim Ahmic on court five.
South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union
UTRGV currently leads the showdown standings by a score of 18.5 to 9.5 points.
UTRGV last won as the men's basketball team picked up the 82-78 win back on December 6.
The next South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, will on February 20 when the baseball teams get in on the fun at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 5-1 on the season after defeating UTSA 4-3 on February 10. The Islanders are currently riding a five-match win streak as they are set to face Prairie View A&M twice before facing UTRGV. Their only loss coming at the hands of the University of Texas to open the season.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has recorded wins over Prairie View A&M, twice, Trinity, twice and the win over UTSA.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 13-41 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 1961.
These two teams met twice last season as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won both times.
The last time UTRGV defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came back on March 10, 2010 when it picked up the 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi.
