EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team scored in six of its eight innings at the plate to beat Stephen F. Austin (SFA) 11-5 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium and complete a four-game sweep of the Al Ogletree Classic.
UTRGV (4-0) head coach
Derek Matlock becomes the third head coach out of 12 in program history to get off to a 4-0 start in his first season, tying the program record held by
Larry Ensminger (1966) and
Red Connor (1959).
Sophomore
Tyler Torres posted his fourth-straight multi-hit game to open the season, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Aaron Dees went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore
Elijah Alexander went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore
Coleman Grubbs went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior
Ivan Estrella reached base four times in five trips, drawing a career-high three walks.
UTRGV scored twice in the first on a pair of errors and then Dees homered to the opposite field off
Trevor Kiminski (0-1) to put UTRGV up 3-0 in the third.
UTRGV scored twice in each of the next four innings. In the fourth, UTRGV scored on a groundout by junior
Anthony Gomez and a Dees single. In the fifth, UTRGV took advantage of a wild pitch and a bases loaded walk to go up 7-2. In the sixth, UTRGV scored on a wild pitch and a Grubbs sacrifice fly. Torres hit a two-run blast in the seventh that cleared the left field bullpen to complete the scoring.
Junior
Trevelle Hill (1-0) pitched the first three innings for UTRGV, striking out four while scattering three hits and one walk.
SFA (0-4) scored twice in the fifth on a home run by
Josh Evans, once in the sixth on a bases loaded walk, and twice in the ninth on a
Luis Santiago single.
UTRGV is back in action on $2 Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive wristbands to redeem #BeatCorpus t-shirts. There will be a student organization tailgate from 6-to-8 p.m. with minute to win it games. General admission tickets and most concession stand items will cost $2 or less. Gates open at 5.
