KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to UMKC 79-59 on Thursday at Swinney Recreation Center.
Junior
Quynne Huggins led UTRGV (13-14, 3-9 WAC) with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting and nine rebounds. Freshman
Amara Graham scored eight points with three rebounds and three assists. Graduate student Weslaco alum
Laura Van Tilburg scored eight points with three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Megan Johnson scored six points with eight rebounds. Junior
Krisynthia Sampson scored six points with six rebounds.
Kristen Moore led UMKC (9-17, 5-6 WAC) with 21 points and six rebounds.
Aries Washington also scored 21 points.
Samantha Waldron scored 11 points with three steals.
India Johnson finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Huggins hit her first five shot attempts and scored UTRGV's first 10 points, but Washington scored 11 points and Moore scored eight as UMKC built a 25-10 lead over the first five and a half minutes.
UTRGV climbed to within 10 at 25-15 on a Johnson free throw a little over two minutes later.
UTRGV was down 14 at the half before Huggins and Sampson made jumpers to bring UTRGV within 42-32, but that's as close as UTRGV got.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Chicago State.
