EDINBURG – Monday's baseball game between The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and No. 21 Mississippi State at UTRGV Baseball Stadium was called in the bottom of the fourth inning due to fog. The game will not be completed and none of the statistics accumulated during the game count.
UTRGV trailed 4-0 when the umpires stopped the game. Senior
Austin Siener had just tripled to center field on a ball that
Jake Magnum couldn't see in the outfield.
There were at least two hits in the top of the inning, when Mississippi State scored its runs, that UTRGV fielders were unable to locate in the fog as well. With Mississippi State up 1-0, a runner on first and two outs,
Rowdey Jordan hit a routine fly ball to left-center field. Neither sophomore
Elijah Alexander not sophomore
Coleman Grubbs could see the ball, which became an RBI-double. One batter later,
Josh Hatcher hit a line drive single to right that junior second basemen
Anthony Gomez didn't appear to be able to see, to score a run.
Junior McAllen Memorial alum
Juan Carreon II made what would have been his first-career start, allowing just one hit over the first three innings before Mississippi State broke through in the fourth.
UTRGV hosts No. 3 Texas Tech on $2 Tuesday at 12 p.m. General admission tickets and most concession items will cost $2 or less. Gates open at 11 a.m.
