Men's Tennis to Host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team is set to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (4-4) picked up a home win on Saturday after defeating Lamar University 5-2 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV got things going in doubles as the team of Dennis Boisseau and Clément Sarradin won on court two before Elliot Johnstone and Mateo Schmit clinched the point with a win on court three.
 
In singles, UTRGV got wins from Sarradin, Yehonatan Kaufman, Koby Jansen and Johnstone to put the match away against Lamar.
 
South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union
UTRGV currently leads the showdown standings by a score of 18.5 to 14.5 points.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has won the last two events after coming off wins in men's tennis and baseball.
 
The next South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, will be women's golf as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hosts the Islander Classic February 26-27.
 
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is off to its best start in program history with an 11-1 record after sweeping through the ULL Invitational.
 
Corpus has picked up wins over East Carolina, Tennessee Tech, and Louisiana.
 
After falling to Texas in its first match of the season, it has now won 11 in a row.
 
Thomas Rodriguez is coming off of a week where he earned Southland Conference Player of the Week honors after he went 4-0 in singles and added two victories in doubles.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 13-42 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 1961.
 
Both of these teams met this season already and it was Texas A&M-Corpus Christi who came away with the 4-3 victory.
 
The last time UTRGV defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came back on March 10, 2010 when it picked up the 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi.

UTRGV currently has nine student-athletes on the roster representing five different countries, including the France (Dennis Boisseau, Clément Sarradin), United States (Jake Davidson, Zane Kohrs, Michael Loyd), Australia (Koby Jansen, Elliot Johnstone), Israel (Yehonatan Kaufman), and Argentina (Mateo Schmit).
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action from March 2-4 when it travels to Corpus Christi to compete in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
