Men's Tennis Closes Out Homestand Saturday Against Incarnate Word

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team wraps up its three-match homestand when they host the University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (2-3) dropped a tight match to UTSA last weekend.
 
UTRGV forced three of the singles matches to three sets while forcing a tiebreaker set in two others.
 
UTRGV won on courts three and four as Yehonatan Kaufman and Elliot Johnstone got UTRGV on the board. Kaufman dropped his first set to Gabriel Bugiga 3-6 but answered back with 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the second and third sets to win his match.
 
Johnstone defeated Javier Gonzalez in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 but UTSA won on the other four singles courts to put the match away.
 
Scouting Incarnate Word
Incarnate Word is 2-3 on the season after falling to Louisiana-Lafayette 3-4 on February 4 at home. Incarnate Word has recorded wins against Georgia Southern and St. Mary's this season while falling to Air Force, Northern Colorado, and Lafayette.

UIW brings back five from last year's squad with six new faces to the roster.
 
Francisco Bendana leads the way for UIW with a 4-1 record in singles play. He has also teamed with Joey Vatanadilok to post a 2-2 record in doubles competition this spring.
 
UIW will next face UT Arlington on February 15.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-4 all-time against Incarnate Word in a series that dates back to 2001.
 
Both of these teams faced off last year and it was Incarnate Word that came away with the 4-1 victory.
 
The last time UTRGV defeated Incarnate Word came back on February 7, 2015 when it picked up the 4-3 win at home.
 
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has nine student-athletes on the roster representing five different countries, including the France (Dennis Boisseau, Clément Sarradin), United States (Jake Davidson, Zane Kohrs, Michael Loyd), Australia (Koby Jansen, Elliot Johnstone), Israel (Yehonatan Kaufman), and Argentina (Mateo Schmit).
 
Next Up
UTRGV will be back on the road when they head to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on February 13 at 2 p.m.
