CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team returns to the H-E-B Tournament of Champions for the third straight year as it faces the University of South Alabama on Friday at 10 a.m. at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
UTRGV will then face either Texas A&M-Corpus Christi or Troy University at 5 p.m.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (4-5) fell short in its comeback attempt against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday falling 3-4 for the second time this season.
UTRGV fell behind early in the match after dropping the doubles point and then it was Texas A&M-Corpus Christi who opened singles with wins at the No. 2 and 3 to extend its lead to 3-0.
Koby Jansen then got UTRGV on the board with a three-set win over Francois Kellerman at No. 1. Zane Kohrs followed with a three-set win of his own over Thomas Rodrigues at No. 4 and then Clément Sarradin answered with a win at No. 5 tying the match at 3-3.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied to win at No. 6 to clinch the match.
Scouting South Alabama
South Alabama is 4-4 on the season after falling 1-4 to Georgia State back on February 24.
South Alabama has recorded wins over Xavier (LA), Lamar, Southern Miss, and Samford with its four losses coming against No. 9 Florida, Pepperdine, Auburn, and Georgia State.
Loic Cloes leads South Alabama with a 7-0 singles record while playing at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots this season. Maxime Lapraile has record a 4-2 record in singles play while Clement Marzol has posted a 3-1 record.
As a team, South Alabama is 21-18 in singles play this spring while posting a 12-8 record in doubles play. Cloes and Marzol have teamed up to lead South Alabama with a 4-1 record with only Sacha Modica and Olivier Gingras the only other team to post at least two wins.
Scouting Troy
Troy is 2-5 on the season heading into its match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Troy is coming off of a 7-0 win over Point University yesterday with its only other win on the season coming against Florida A&M back on February 23.
Troy opened the season with four losses after falling to Ole Miss, North Florida, Elon, and Southern Mississippi. Its other loss came at the hands of Stetson on February 24.
Pelayo Atuna leads Troy with a 4-1 singles record while Mustapha Belcora and Oskar Michalek have each posted three singles victories. As a team, Troy is 18-21 in singles play.
In doubles, Troy is 7-13 while using nine different doubles teams. Belcora and Michalek have posted a 2-1 record this spring while playing at the No. 1 spot. Amer Bedwan and Andy Lau have posted a 2-0 record while Atuna and Jiaqi Duan have posted a 2-4 doubles record.
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi heads into the H-E-B Tournament of Champions with a 12-1 record and with a 12-match win streak.
UTRGV has seen them twice this year falling both times 3-4.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finds themselves ranked 65
th in the NCAA National rankings.
Francois Kellerman was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week after posting a 4-1 record. He followed Thomas Rodrigues as the second Islander in back-to-back weeks to get the honor.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 0-5 all-time against South Alabama in a series that dates back to 1993. Both of these teams met up last year as South Alabama came away with the 4-0 win.
UTRGV has never faced Troy in its program history.
UTRGV is 13-43 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi after falling to them twice this season. The last time UTRGV defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was back on March 10, 2010 when it picked up the 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi.

Next Up
UTRGV will close out the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Saturday either at 9 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. against one of the teams between DePaul, New Mexico State, UTSA or Louisiana.
