EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team scored eight runs in the fourth inning en route to a 12-1, seven-inning victory over Maine in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Up 3-1, UTRGV (9-7) got off to a good start in the fourth when junior
Anthony Gomez hit a leadoff home run. Two of the next three batters reached, setting up an RBI-single by junior
Conrad McMahon. After a single by sophomore
Coleman Grubbs loaded the bases, senior
Ivan Estrella hit a fly ball to center that was caught, but the throw to the plate forced catcher
Jonathan Bennett up the third base line and he couldn't hang on. The ball got away, allowing two runs to score. Senior
Austin Siener followed with a walk, and then sophomore Mercedes alum
Matthew Mendoza singled home Grubbs. A wild pitch scored Siener, and then after Gomez singled, junior
Aaron Dees hit a two-run double to knock out
Trevor Delaite (1-1).
Siener came up with an RBI-single in the fifth to put UTRGV up 11.
That was more than enough for junior
Trevelle Hill (3-1), who, after allowing a run on hits to two of the first three batters, settled down to retired 14 of the next 16 batters he faced. He didn't allow another hit until the sixth.
In total, Hill pitched six innings, striking out four while allowing three hits and two walks.
Junior
Ben Butler struck out one in a perfect inning of relief.
UTRGV scored its first three runs in the third on a Grubbs single, a Siener sacrifice fly, and a double-steal that allowed Grubbs to swipe home.
Grubbs finished 3-for-4 with a career-high three runs scored. Gomez, McMahon and freshman Mercedes alum
Oliver Closner IV all finished with two hits and two runs scored.
