NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's basketball team (15-17) opens the
College Basketball Invitational (CBI) against New Orleans (15-16) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lakefront Arena.
UTRGV fans are encouraged to go to a watch party at University Drafthouse at 2405 W. University Dr. in Edinburg to watch the game together.
The winner of this game will face the winner of Miami (Ohio) and Campbell in the quarterfinals on March 19.
This is the second time the men's basketball program has been involved in postseason play at the NCAA Division I level, including a 1981 appearance in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).
The program has also been to the NCAA Division II Tournament, advancing to the second round in 1968, and six NAIA Tournaments, winning the 1963 NAIA National Championship.
In total, the program has made eight previous postseason appearances, going 17-10.
The CBI is a 16-team tournament that first came into existence in 2008. All competition takes place at campus sites. The bracket will be re-seeded after the quarterfinals. The championship round is a best-of-three series at rotating sites.
The rest of the field includes Eastern Washington, Utah Valley, Colgate, San Francisco, North Texas, South Dakota, Mercer, Grand Canyon, Central Arkansas, Seattle U, Jacksonville State and Canisius.
The semifinals are scheduled for March 21 while the championship round dates are March 26, 28 and 30.
All games of the championship round are televised on ESPNU.
Previous CBI champions including Wyoming, Nevada, Loyola-Chicago, Siena, Santa Clara, Pittsburgh, Oregon, VCU, Oregon State and Tulsa. Teams from nearly every conference have participated in the event. Twenty-eight teams have used the CBI to springboard to the NCAA Tournament the following year, while another 18 have gone on to the NIT.
