NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to the University of New Orleans (UNO) 77-74 on Wednesday at Lakefront Arena in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
Junior
Terry Winn led UTRGV (15-18) 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior
Mike Hoffman scored 13 points while going 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Senior
Nick Dixon scored 11 points with six rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Greg Bowie finished with 10 points.
Dixon finishes his career tied for 10
th in program history with 1,282 points, matching recently inducted Hall of Famer
Mire Chatman (2000-02). Dixon scored 670 points this season, the seventh-highest single-season total in program history, while hitting a program record 222 free throws.
Lamont Berzat led UNO (16-16) with 21 points, 10 assists and four steals.
Damion Rosser scored 14 points with five assists.
Ezekiel Charles scored 12 points.
UNO scored the first six points of the game en route to a 14-6 lead.
UNO still led by eight at 17-9, when a jumper and a layup by junior
Lew Stallworth sparked a 14-4 run to put UTRGV up 23-21. UTRGV hit all five of its shots during the run and hit 10 of its final 12 shots during the half while going up by as much as three and ending the period tied at 37.
Berzat hit a pair of three-pointers as UNO opened the second half on a 13-6 run to go up 50-43.
UTRGV still trailed by seven with 5:47 remaining before scoring the next six points to pull within 66-65.
UTRGV was within one three more times, including 72-71 on a pair of Winn free throws with 32 seconds left, but UNO hit five of its last six free throw attempts to end the game.
