EDINBURG – Junior
Conrad McMahon hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to a 4-3, 13-inning victory over Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, completing the series sweep.
This was UTRGV's (13-8) longest game since April 23, 2016, a 4-3, 15-inning home loss to Sacramento State.
UTRGV trailed 3-1 with two outs and the bases clean in the sixth when junior
Anthony Gomez singled and sophomore
Tyler Torres drew a walk. Sophomore
Aaron Dees pinch-hit and smacked the first pitch he saw off the right field wall for a two-run double to tie the game.
The scored stayed tied at 3 from there, as freshman
Max Balderrama Jr. pitched a career-high 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out a career-high seven while scattering three hits and one walk.
EMU (5-13) threatened in the top of the 13
th, loading the bases with one out, but junior
Ben Butler (1-1) got a double play to end the threat.
UTRGV loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the inning against
Scott Granzotto (0-1), setting up McMahon's sacrifice fly.
Four UTRGV hitters recorded two hits, including Torres, who scored three runs and drew a walk, Gomez, who scored once, senior
Austin Siener, who also drew a walk, and sophomore
Elijah Alexander.
UTRGV took an early lead, going up 1-0 on an RBI-single by senior
Noah Lee in the second.
EMU responded by opening the third with six-straight hits, including run-scoring singles by
Jeff Timko and
Nate Jones, to take a 3-1 lead.
UTRGV plays its final non-conference game before the start of Western Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
