EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game series to Sacramento State 5-2 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
After UTRGV (20-22, 5-8 WAC) was held to one hit over the first 7.2 innings, junior
Anthony Gomez singled and sophomore
Coleman Grubbs launched his third home run of the season to bring UTRGV within 4-2.
In the top of the ninth, however, Sacramento State (23-17, 10-3 WAC) added a run on a ground-rule RBI-double by
Matt Smith and then
Tanner Dalton came on and pitched a hitless bottom of the inning for his eighth save.
Sophomore
Tyler Torres had UTRGV's lone hit against Sacramento State starter
Scott Randall(4-3), a single in the second. Sophomore
Elijah Alexander was plunked in the fourth, but Randall didn't allow any other base runners in five innings. He struck out three.
Senior PSJA alum
Jorge Flores (6-4) matched Randall pitch for pitch over the first five innings. In the sixth, however, Sacramento State put two on with one out, setting up RBI-singles by
Bronson Grubbs and
Josh Urp. Then, after a walk loaded the bases and knocked out Flores,
Ian Dawkins reached on a fielder's choice to drive-in a run before an error scored the final run.
UTRGV and Sacramento State play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. for Community Heroes Night, presented by Jason's Deli. UTRGV Athletics would like to thank police, fire fighters, emergency medical services, active duty military, veterans, nurses and doctors for their service by offering them and accompanying guests specially priced $3 general admission tickets. Community heroes arriving by 5:40 p.m. and checking in at the main entrance will be invited onto the field during the national anthem. Gates open at 5.
