EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game series to Sacramento State 5-2 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Sophomore
Elijah Alexander led UTRGV (21-23, 6-9 WAC) offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
In the first, after sophomore
Coleman Grubbs led off with a double, Alexander singled to put runners on the corners. One out later, Alexander took off for second and drew a throw, allowing Grubbs to score to tie the game at 1.
Then, with UTRGV down 4-1 in the sixth, Alexander hit a leadoff double and later scored when senior
Austin Siener hit into a double play.
That was all against Sacramento State (24-18, 11-4 WAC) starter
Austin Root (7-3), who allowed six hits while striking out six in six innings.
Sacramento State loaded the bases with nobody out in the first, but junior
Trevelle Hill (4-4) limited the damage by getting
PJ Floyd to hit into a double play that scored just one run.
James Outman hit a three-run home run in the third to put Sacramento State up 4-1.
That was it until the seventh, when a Floyd RBI-single knocked out Hill and made the score 5-2.
Tanner Dalton pitched two perfect innings for his ninth save.
UTRGV is back in action on $2 Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Incarnate Word at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. General admission tickets and most concession items will cost $2 or less. Gates open at 5.
