EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer teamopened the 2018 season with a 4-1 victory over Texas Southern as part of the UTRGV Tournament at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The four goals are the most UTRGV (1-0-0) has ever scored on opening night. UTRGV has now outscored opponents 11-3 all-time while going 4-1-0 in season openers.

Emily Zapatatook the pitch for the first time and scored her first-career goal on a free kick from just outside the top of the box seven second later to make the score 3-0.
On the next play of the match, a foul in the box led to a penalty kick goal by
Kayla Smithto bring Texas Southern (0-1-0) within 3-1.
Sophomore
Jada MacLeancompleted the scoring by going top shelf in the 84
thminute off a pass from freshman IDEA Toros College Prep alum
Isabella Marinaro.
Junior
Kinga Szemik(1-0-0) finished with three saves for UTRGV while
Alexis Robles (0-1-0) made one save in the first half and
Paula Vizosomade six saves in the second half for Texas Southern.
UTRGV outshot Texas Southern 18-6, including 11-4 on goal.
UTRGV closes out the tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Oral Roberts, which beat Portland State 1-0 in the first match Friday. Texas Southern faces Portland State at 11 a.m. Sunday. Gates open at 10.
