EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team produced one of its best defensive efforts in five years, beating Chicago State 77-46 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The 46 points are the fewest allowed by UTRGV (11-12, 3-4 WAC) since March 1, 2014, when UTRGV allowed 45 points at Utah Valley.
Sophomore
Javon Levi led UTRGV with a career-high 12 assists, nine points, a game-high eight rebounds, and a game-high four steals. Senior
Terry Winn III scored a game-high 14 points. Junior
Jordan Jackson hit a career-high three three-pointers en route to 13 points. Sophomore
Greg Bowie II also hit three three-pointers, tying a career high, to score 13 points. Graduate student
Tyson Smith finished with 11 points.
UTRGV finished with 11 three-pointers, the team's highest total since Nov. 28, 2017, when UTRGV hit 12 three-pointers at SMU.
Anthony Harris led CSU (3-19, 0-7 WAC) with 12 points and eight rebounds.
CSU led 5-2 in the opening minutes before two threes and a layup by Smith powered a 12-2 run to put UTRGV up 14-7.
CSU pulled within 19-15 with 7:44 remaining in the first half, but Jackson came up with two three-pointers, a layup and a dunk as part of a 17-2 run to give UTRGV a 36-17 halftime lead.
UTRGV then opened the second half on a 17-6 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Kansas City for Winter Texan Night at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. All Winter Texans in attendance will receive discounted general admission tickets of $5 and free popcorn. Doors open at 6.
