RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team beat the California Baptist University Lancers 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-17) to secure head coach Todd Lowery's 500th career victory on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Lowery now has a career record of 500-102 (.831) in 17 seasons as a head coach, including a 115-28 (.804) record in conference play.

Senior Barbara Silva led the Vaqueros (12-12, 6-4 WAC) with 18 kills on .361 hitting and a season-high tying six blocks. Sophomore Sarah Cruz recorded 15 kills with nine digs, a career-high six blocks, two aces and two assists. Junior Veronika Jandova posted a career-high 13 kills on .579 hitting with a season-high tying seven blocks. Freshman Victoire Nama finished with 10 kills. Junior Debora Nazario dished out 48 assists with nine digs.

Sydney Marks led the Lancers (10-12, 4-5 WAC) with nine kills.

The first set was tied at nine early before a 5-0 run, capped by three-straight Silva kills, gave the Vaqueros the lead. The Lancers got as close as two at 15-17 before Jandova came up with a kill and two blocks to fuel an 8-3 run to end the set.

The third set was tight at first as well. With the Lancers taking a 15-13 lead. After a timeout, though, a kill by senior Talita Oliveira sparked a 5-0 run to give the Vaqueros the lead. Then, with the score tied at 17, Cruz came up with two kills and junior Samaret Caraballo served up a pair of aces as part of an 8-1 run to end the set.

The Vaqueros dominated the fourth set, going up 4-1 on an ace by sophomore McAllen alum Carter Helmcamp, 8-4 on back-to-back Cruz kills, 15-8 on a block by Jandova and Cruz, and 20-10 on an error. The Lancers got as close as seven, but an error on match point ended the set.
