RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team won its home opener against the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets 93-42 on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Freshman
Quinton Johnson II led the Vaqueros (1-1) with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc with five rebounds. Graduate student
Jordan Jackson scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Junior
Javon Levi scored 10 points with five rebounds, 12 assists and four steals. Junior
Anthony Bratton scored 10 points with two blocks. Senior
Lesley Varner II finished with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior
Chris Freeman also scored nine points.
Timothy Aguero led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points.
Jase Miguez finished with 13 points.
Bratton opened the game with back-to-back jumpers as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 9-2 lead.
The Yellow Jackets closed to within 16-11 after six minutes. That's when Johnson scored seven points to power a 14-0 run, putting the Vaqueros up 30-11.
The Yellow Jackets responded with three-straight baskets for seven points, but another Johnson three sparked a 12-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 42-20.
Johnson closed the half with back-to-back threes to help the Vaqueros embark on a 14-2 run to go up 61-29.
Then, with the score 73-40 in the second half, the Vaqueros went on a 20-0 run that featured freshman
Connor Raines' first-career basket, a three-pointer, to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV opens up the Islander Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, on Friday at 5 p.m. against North Dakota State.
