CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team dropped its first matchup of the season in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, 61-50 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at Dugan Wellness Center.
UTRGV's lead in the showdown standings is now 13-12.

Zhane Templeton led the Vaqueros (2-3) with 10 points. Junior
Trelynn Tyler and senor
Megan Johnson each added eight points while graduate student
Jordan Agustus chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.
The Islanders (3-2) got a game-high 20 points from
Dalesia Booth with
Alexes Bryant adding 12 points and six rebounds and
Makinna Serrata scoring 10 points.
The Islanders jumped out to the quick lead after back-to-back buckets by Booth and Serrata to open the game. Tyler sparked a 13-3 run with a layup and
Zhane Templeton capped the run with a three-pointer to give UTRGV the 13-7 lead. The Islanders answered back as it closed out the quarter on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good at 18-15.
Agustus started off the scoring in the second with a layup but baskets by
Emma Young and Serrata pushed Corpus Christi's lead to 22-17 with 7:45 left in the half. Later in the quarter freshman
Sara Bershers got UTRGV within 31-29 with her first-career three-pointer but the Islanders took the 33-29 lead going into halftime.

Amara Graham opened the second half scoring with a layup to get the Vaqueros within 33-31. The Islanders then went on a 13-3 run that was capped by a
Tiara Matthews layup that extended its lead to 46-34 with 2:55 left in the quarter.
The Islanders got their biggest lead of the game at 54-36 with six-straight points to start the fourth. The Vaqueros got a three-pointer from Johnson, a layup from freshman
Halie Jones, and a layup from Tyler that got UTRGV within 58-48 with 55 seconds left to play as the Islanders closed out the game with free throws to secure the win.
UTRGV kicks off a four-game homestand when it hosts Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Fans can receive a free general admission ticket when they donate five non-perishable food items to help restock the UTRGV Food Pantry. The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Saturday, Nov. 30 when men's basketball hosts Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
