BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team fell 3-4 to Lamar University on Friday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center as the match came down to the final court.
 
UTRGV (2-6) dropped the doubles point as Lamar (2-5) won on courts one and two. Sophomore Michael Loyd and junior Mateo Schmit gave UTRGV the early advantage in doubles with a 6-4 win over Brock Lauer and Arthur Serafim on court three but Lamar took the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
 
Lamar opened singles play with a win on court one but sophomore Zane Kohrs followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court six over Lauer to get UTRGV on the board.
 
Freshman George Hutchings tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Joshua Taylor on court three. Junior Clément Sarradin then gave UTRGV the 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Carlos Paton Canal on court four but Lamar pulled out victories on the final two courts to clinch the win.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday when it faces Southern Miss at 10 a.m. in a neutral site match.
