BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team was edged by Southern Miss 3-4 on Saturday at Lamar's Thompson Family Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (2-7) took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Sophomore Michael Loyd and junior Mateo Schmit recorded a 6-4 win on court three to tie doubles at 1, and then senior Yehonatan Kaufman and freshman George Hutchings pulled out a 7-5 win on court 1.
 
Kaufman's success carried over to singles, during which he dispatched Tom Cecchetto 6-2, 7-5 on court 2.
 
Sophomore Zane Kohrs also recorded a singles win, as after eeking out a 7-5 win in set 1 over Panji Setiawan, Kohrs dominated the second set 6-1.
 
Two courts went to three sets, with court three serving as the decider. After dropping the first set to Matthieu Peres 2-6, Hutchings bounced back for a 6-2 win in the second set. Set three came down to a decisive 13^thgame, which Peres won to send Southern Miss (3-2) to victory.
 
UTRGV looks to compete at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Friday in Corpus Christi. UTRGV's next dual match is set for Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. against Laredo Community College at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Admission is complimentary.
