OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 72-57 loss to Utah Valley University (UVU) on Saturday at the UCCU Center.
Senior
Nichele Hyman led UTRGV (14-11, 8-4 WAC) with 12 points. Senior
Quynne Huggins scored 11 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Senior
Idil Türk finished with 10 points while hitting three three-pointers of her own.
Jordan Holland led UVU (13-11, 7-4 WAC) with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Maria Carvalho scored 16 points with seven assists.
Eve Braslis scored 14 points with six rebounds and eight assists.
Alexis Cortez finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
UTRGV hit six of their nine three-pointers in the first quarter, including two by Türk, two by Hyman, one by Huggins and one by junior
Shaiann Tramble to build a 24-11 lead.
UTRGV still led by 13 early in the second at 26-13 before UVU scored seven-straight points to pull within six.
Then, with the score 31-25, Huggins hit a three to spark an 8-0 run and give UTRGV its largest lead of the game at 39-25 with 2:41 to go.
UTRGV led by 10 at the half, but UVU scored the first 11 points of the third to take the lead. UTRGV led once more, at 42-41 on a jumper by sophomore
Amara Graham. The game was also tied at 45 late in the quarter, but UVU went on a 27-9 run to pick up the win.
UTRGV returns home on Saturday at 7 p.m. for a showdown against first place New Mexico State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Fans can take advantage of friends and family four packs which include four tickets, four hot dogs, and four drinks for $25. Doors open at 6.
