EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team won its program record-tying ninth conference game by beating Chicago State University (CSU) 84-38 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
This is the third time UTRGV (15-12, 9-5 WAC) has ever won nine conference game after previously doing so in 2014-15 and 2015-16 (9-5 each year).
The 84 points tie a record for most points scored by UTRGV in a WAC game. This is the fourth time UTRGV has done so and the first time since March 7, 2015 against Kansas City.
Senior
Idil Türk led UTRGV with 14 points while hitting four three-pointers and dishing out four assists. Graduate student
Madison Northcutt scored 11 points with six rebounds. Sophomore
Amara Graham scored nine points, three rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Senior
Quynne Huggins scored nine points. Junior
Megan Johnson also scored nine points. Junior
Makaela Mosley scored eight points with nine rebounds and two steals.
Alexandria Cliff led CSU (2-25, 2-12 WAC) with 11 points.
Graham hit a three-pointer and a layup to start the game as UTRGV jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
UTRGV then extended its lead to 18-2 on a pair of Johnson free throws.
CSU got as close as 15 three times, including at 29-14 early in the second quarter before Huggins made a layup as UTRGV scored six-straight points to go up 35-14.
UTRGV's lead was 43-23 early in the third quarter, but Türk hit four three-pointers in less than five minutes while scoring 14 points during a 16-4 run to put the game on ice.
UTRGV hosts Kansas City for senior night on Saturday at 7 p.m. There will be a special pregame ceremony honoring the nine-member senior class. Doors open at 6.
