EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team won its third-straight game, 49-42 over Grand Canyon University (GCU) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Amara Graham led UTRGV (12-10, 6-3 WAC) with a career-high 18 points and three assists. Graduate student
Madison Northcutt finished with a team-high 12 rebounds, a game-high three steals and one block.
Da'jah Daniel led GCU (5-14, 3-6 WAC) with 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.
The game was tight throughout the first half. UTRGV led by as much as three at 11-8 last in the first quarter before an 8-0 GCU run put GCU up 16-11.
UTRGV came back to tie the game at 19 late in the second quarter on a Graham layup before a
Laura Piera free throw gave GCU a one-point advantage heading into the half.
UTRGV regained the lead midway through the third quarter when a layup by senior
Jameka Dowell capped an 8-2 run with the score 27-24.
GCU led once more, at 31-29 late in the third, but senior
Krisynthia Sampson hit a three and then UTRGV went 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) from the line in the fourth to pull away for the victory.
UTRGV hosts CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Fans can take advantage of friends and family four packs that include four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for just $25. Doors open at 6.
