MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior
Trevelle Hill pitched a complete game for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team but Kansas State made three runs stand as UTRGV fell 3-1 on Friday at Tointon Family Stadium.
Hill (4-1) gave UTRGV's (12-6) bullpen the night off as he pitched eight innings while allowing just three runs on six hits and striking out six.
Kansas State (9-8) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning. After
Cameron Thompson started the inning with a single, he moved to second on a groundout and then to third on a single by
Zach Kokoska.
Chris Ceballos drove in Thompson with a sacrifice fly making it 1-0.
Thompson got things started in the bottom of the fourth with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Terrence Spurlin. Kokoska followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game scoring Thompson extending Kansas State's lead to 2-0
UTRGV produced its run in the top of the fifth with two outs against Kansas State starter
Griffin Hassall. Redshirt junior
Andy Atwood started the rally with a single to right field and then stole second. Senior
Anthony Gomez hit an RBI double down the right field line scoring Atwood and cutting into the Kansas State lead 2-1.
Atwood tied a career-high with three hits as he finished the night 3-for-5 for his 11
thmulti-hit game of the season.
Kansas State added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as
Thomas Hughes hit an RBI single scoring pinch runner
Blake Burrows from second for the final run of the ball game.
Andrew Stratman (2-0) picked up the win after pitching an inning and a third. The Kansas State bullpen combined for four and a third innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just two hits.
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday for the second game of the series with Kansas State starting at 4 p.m.
