MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team dropped the middle game of the three-game series with Kansas State 7-1 on Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.
UTRGV (12-7) got the scoring started in the top of the first against Kansas State starter
Jordan Wicks (3-0). Redshirt junior
Andy Atwood kicked off the inning with a leadoff double. One out later, junior
Conrado Diaz delivered an RBI double that scored Atwood giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead.
That would be all Wicks would give up as he pitched six and a third innings while scattering five hits and striking out six.
Kansas State (10-8) answered back in the bottom of the second inning.
Zach Kokoska singled through the right side with two outs in the inning before
Chris Ceballos hit a two-run home run to right field giving Kansas State the 2-1 lead.
Kansas State added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning knocking UTRGV starter
Nick Hollas (0-2) out of the game.
Dylan Phillips made it 3-1 Kansas State with a solo home run and then one out later,
Will Brennan hit a double to left and then came into score on an RBI single from
Cameron Thompson.
Terrance Spurlin followed with an RBI double scoring Thompson that made it 5-1 Kansas State.
Hollas allowed five runs on six hits in two and two-third innings pitched.
Ceballos put the cap on the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with his second two-run home run of the game.
Redshirt freshman
Jacob Hirsh finished the ball game 2-for-3 with a double.
UTRGV will wrap up the three-game series with Kansas State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
