EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team fell 3-4 in a tight match against Nicholls State University on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in the first match of the UTRGV Spring Break Showdown.
 
UTRGV (2-15) came out strong in doubles as the duo of freshman George Hutchings and junior Clément Sarradin picked up the 6-2 win over Oleksandr Podgursky and Tobias Lentz on court one. 
 
The duo of sophomore Michael Loyd and junior Mateo Schmit clinched the point for UTRGV with a 6-4 win over Mortiz Borges and Nestor Biribet on court three.
 
UTRGV battled with Nicholls State (3-7) in singles as six sets went into tiebreakers but it was Nicholls State winning on courts four, one, two, and three to clinch the win.  
 
Freshman Te Kani Williams picked up his first-ever collegiate win defeating Moritz Borges on court five. After dropping the first set, Williams found himself trailing 4-5 in the second set but fought back to win it 7-5 before winning the tiebreaker 10-4.
 
On court six, freshman Georgije Babic closed out the match with a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Alvaro Barranco.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday when it closes out the UTRGV Spring Break Showdown against Alcorn State at 11 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
