Men's Tennis Ready For First WAC Matches of the Season

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team open up Western Athletic Conference play this weekend when it faces New Mexico State, Kansas City, and Seattle U at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV will face New Mexico State at 2 p.m. on Friday, Kansas City at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and Seattle U at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
 
Last Time Out
  • UTRGV defeated Alcorn State 4-0 to close out the UTRGV Spring Break Showdown.
  • UTRGV took the doubles point by winning on courts one and two. 
  • George Hutchings and Clément Sarradin defeated John Parat and Gjorgji Popovski 7-5 on court one.
  • Jake Davidson and Samuel de Felipe Garcia picked up the 6-4 win over Stojan Stojanovski and Ivan Matas on court two. 
  • In singles, UTRGV won on courts four, six and one. 
  • Sarradin beat Santiago Rocca 6-0, 6-1 on court four, Georgije Babic defeated Ivan Matas 6-2, 6-0 on court six, and de Felipe Garcia beat Gjorgji Popovski 6-4, 6-0 on court one.
 
All-Time Series
  • UTRGV is 3-10 against New Mexico State all-time in a series that dates back to 1975.
  • UTRGV and New Mexico State faced off earlier this season as it was New Mexico State coming away with a 4-3 win at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
  • UTRGV last defeated New Mexico State in 1994.
  • UTRGV is 3-5 all-time against Kansas City in a series that dates back to 2014.
  • UTRGV faced Kansas City twice in 2018 dropping both matches, including falling 4-0 in the semifinals match in the WAC Tournament.
  • The last time UTRGV defeated Kansas City came on April 25, 2015 where it won 4-2 in the opening round of the WAC Tournament. 
  • UTRGV is 6-1 all-time against Seattle U in a series that dates back to 1980.
  • UTRGV picked up the 4-1 win over Seattle U in the opening round of the WAC Tournament last season.
 
Scouting New Mexico State
  • New Mexico State is 9-8 on the season.
  • NMSU is currently on a three-match win streak after wins over Southern Miss, New Orleans, and Nicholls State.
  • NMSU is 41-42 in singles play this season with Louis Menard leading the way with nine victories. 
  • In doubles, NMSU is 20-14 with Luis Flores and Nicolas Buitrago leading the team with seven victories. They have used just four doubles teams this spring.
 
Scouting Kansas City
  • Kansas City is 5-9 on the season.
  • Kansas City is coming off of a 3-4 loss to Creighton on Mar. 26
  • Kansas City has wins over Northwest Missouri State, Missouri-St. Louis, Lindenwood, Coe College, and Oral Roberts.
  • Kansas City is 37-35 in singles play this season with Diego Giraldo leads the team with eight wins.
  • In doubles, Kansas City is 18-19 this season with Giraldo and Ben Stride lead the team with nine doubles victories. They have used just four doubles teams this spring.
 
Scouting Seattle U
  • Seattle U is 4-7 on the season.
  • Seattle U is coming off of a 6-1 win over Pacific University on Mar. 17.
  • Seattle U has wins over Puget Sound, Whitworth College, George Fox, and Pacific 
  • Had three of its matches cancelled in last February.
  • Seattle U is 25-41 in singles matches this spring with Alex Chan and Adrian Sanabria tied for the team lead with five singles victories.
  • In doubles, Seattle U is 10-23 with Arshak Ghazaryan and Trenton Nield leading the team with four doubles victories.
