LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team dropped its first Western Athletic Conference match of the season after falling 1-6 to New Mexico State (NMSU) on Friday at the NM State Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (3-16, 0-1 WAC) fell behind in doubles after dropping the match on court two but answered back with a win on court three after juniors Clément Sarradin and Mateo Schmit defeated Nicolas Buitrago and Luis Flores on court three.
 
New Mexico State (10-8, 1-0 WAC) took the doubles point with a win on court one as it took the 1-0 lead into singles.
 
NMSU opened singles with wins on courts two, six and one to clinch the win. 
 
Senior Yehonatan Kaufman got UTRGV on the board with a win on court three over Martin Simecek. After falling 1-6 in the first set, Kaufman answered with a 6-4 win in the second to force a tiebreaker where he dominated with a 10-4 win to take the match.
 
NMSU closed out the match with wins on courts four and five. 
 
UTRGV will return to the court on Saturday to face Kansas City at 2 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
