UTRGV Clinches No. 2 Seed With CSU Bakersfield Loss

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team trailed by as many as 22 points in the first half against California Baptist University (CBU) but a strong second half wasn't enough losing 66-63 on Thursday at the CBU Events Center to close out the regular season.

Despite the loss, UTRGV (16-13, 10-6 WAC) has clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a CSU Bakersfield loss to Seattle U. UTRGV will face either Chicago State or Seattle U on Wednesday, March 13, at 8 p.m.

Senior Idil Türk led all scorers with a career-high 25 points. Senior Quynne Huggins scored 12 points with five rebounds while redshirt senior Madison Northcutt posted her 11thdouble-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

CBU (18-10, 11-4 WAC) was led by Caitlyn Harper who scored 14 points while Ane Olaeta scored 12 points with six assists and seven rebounds.

Trailing 42-26 at half time, UTRGV came out of the locker room determined to climb back in the game. UTRGV held CBU to just 24 points in the second half.

Türk scored 17 of her 25 points in the second half as she got the scoring started with a three-pointer. Later in the third, Huggins knocked down a jumper that got UTRGV within 47-39 with 3:45 left in the quarter.

CBU pushed its lead back to 14 points after a layup by Harper made it 56-42 but UTRGV closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run to get the score back to 56-47.

In the fourth, Türk once again opened the quarter with a basket that got UTRGV within 56-49 and then Türk knocked down a three-pointer that made it 58-52 with 8:24 left in the game. CBU answered with a 6-0 run that was capped by a Olaeta jumper that made it 64-52 with 6:40 left.

UTRGV then held CBU to just two points over the last 5:56 as UTRGV put together an 11-2 run to close out the game. Türk hit a fast break three-pointer that made it 65-57. Junior Megan Johnson followed with a layup before Northcutt continued the rally with a layup with 2:52 left to play.

Senior Nichele Hyman joined in on the fun as she converted on a layup to make it 66-63 before UTRGV missed a three-pointer as time expired with a chance to tie.
