BROWNSVILLE – The fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team is set to compete at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament starting on Friday at the Brownsville Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV opens against No. 4 Chicago State at 1 p.m. with the winner moving on to face top-seeded Grand Canyon on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
All-Time Series

• UTRGV is 4-1 all-time against Chicago State in a series that dates back to 2015.
• Chicago State came away with the 4-3 victory earlier this season.
• UTRGV is 1-5 all-time against Grand Canyon in a series that dates back to 2014.
• Grand Canyon won 7-0 to close out WAC play.
• Last time UTRGV defeated Grand Canyon came on March 27, 2015 when it won 4-3 at home.
• UTRGV is 3-11 against New Mexico State all-time in a series that dates back to 1975.
• UTRGV fell in two matches to New Mexico State 1-6 and 3-4.
• UTRGV last defeated New Mexico State in 1994.
• UTRGV is 3-6 all-time against Kansas City in a series that dates back to 2014.
• UTRGV fell 3-4 to Kansas City this season.
• The last time UTRGV defeated Kansas City came on April 25, 2015 where it won 4-2 in the opening round of the WAC Tournament.

Scouting Chicago State

• Chicago State earned the fourth seed in the WAC Tournament after going 2-3 in WAC play.
• Chicago State went 6-18 overall this spring.
• Gonzalo Martinez earned All-WAC Second Team honors in singles to lead Chicago State.
• The two wins for Chicago State in WAC play came against UTRGV and Seattle U.

 
Scouting Grand Canyon

• Grand Canyon earned the top seed after going undefeated in WAC play.
• GCU has an overall record of 17-6 this spring.
• GCU is 91-36 in singles play while posting a record of 42-15 in doubles and only using three teams.
• Lorenzo Fucile was named WAC Player of the Year with a 15-8 record at the No. 1 spot.
• GCU took five of the six spots on the First Team in singles with Fucile, Valentin Lang, Lucas Grego, Freddie Grant, and Jakub Novak taking the honors.
• Lucas Grego leads GCU with a 19-3 record in singles play with five others over 10 victories this spring.
• In doubles, all three of its teams have over 12 wins.

 
Scouting Kansas City

• UMKC finished earned the second seed in the WAC Tournament after a 3-2 record in WAC play.
• UMKC has a 9-11 overall record.
• Diego Giraldo earned All-WAC Second Team honors in singles with a 4-1 record.
• UMKC is 61-47 in singles play this spring with a 28-27 record in doubles.
• Giraldo leads the team with a 13-3 record in singles this spring.
• Giraldo and Ben Stride have led the team this spring with a 15-4 record with a 5-0 record in WAC play.

 
Scouting Seattle U

• Seattle U took the sixth seed in the WAC Tournament after going winless in WAC play.
• Seattle U has an overall record of 4-11.
• Seattle U is 29-67 this spring in singles play and 15-33 in doubles.
• Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria leads the team with a 6-9 record this spring.
• Arshak Ghazaryan and Tenton Nield lead the team with a 4-5 record.

 
Scouting New Mexico State

• New Mexico State earned the second seed in the WAC Tournament after a 4-1 record in WAC play with the only loss coming to GCU.
• Overall, NMSU has a 14-9 record.
• Louis Menard earned All-WAC First Team honors in singles while Martin Simecek and Stihn de Haan earned Second Team honors.
• Luis Flores and Nicolas Buitrago and Mauri Benitez and de Haan earned All-WAC Second Team honors in doubles.
• NMSU is 66-53 in singles play this season and 32-20 in doubles.
• Menard leads the team with a 15-6 record in singles play.
• Buitrago and Flores lead the team with a 12-5 record in doubles.

 
Last Time Out

• UTRGV closed out its regular season with a 0-7 loss to Grand Canyon.
• Yehonatan Kaufman and George Hutchings won on doubles court two but UTRGV dropped the doubles point.
• GCU swept through singles play to clinch the win.

 
WAC Honors

• All-WAC honors were announced on Thursday with Yehonatan Kaufman earned All-WAC Second Team honors in singles after going 2-3 in WAC play.
• Mateo Schmit and Clément Sarradin teamed up to earn All-WAC Second Team honors in doubles.
